Pressed To Print: A Simple Hello Can Go a Long Way

Today, I had a delivery pickup at my office.
The driver came in quickly, looking for the packages. He walked through the office, focused on finding what he came for. There was no “hello,” no eye contact, and no acknowledgment that anyone was there.
I waited for him to stop.
Then I kindly said, “Hello.”
He responded that he was there to pick up three packages.
In my nicest voice, I said:
“We say hello here. I’ll be assisting you with your packages.”
Now, I could have been offended. I could have matched his energy or simply pointed him toward the packages.
But that's not how I choose to do business.
To me, professionalism isn't just about getting the job done. It's about how we treat people while we're getting it done.
Maybe he was having a long day. Maybe he was running behind. Maybe he had several more stops to make.
I don't know.
And that's the point.
We don't always know what someone else is carrying when they walk through our door.
But we do control how we respond.
A simple hello, a moment of eye contact, or acknowledging another person can completely change an interaction.
This experience also made me think about small-business owners and customer service.
We often talk about customers being respectful to businesses, but good business relationships go both ways.
Employees, vendors, delivery drivers, customers, and business owners all interact with one another every day.
We're all people first.
So here's my reminder for today:
Slow down. Say hello. Acknowledge the person in front of you.
You never know what kind of impression those few seconds might leave.
And if you're a small-business owner, remember that your customer service isn't only about what you sell.
Sometimes, it's simply about how you make people feel when they walk through your door.
What do you think?
Does a simple greeting matter to you when you walk into a business?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Helping you build business behind the business.
